Rishi Tea is Perfection in a Cup
By: Jeanette Hurt
A perfectly steeped cup of tea can be a balm to soothe a weary soul, a little respite of peace for uncertain times, or just a naturally healthy beverage that enhances the day. And nobody knows this ancient beverage like Milwaukee's very own Rishi Tea.
This international tea company offers more than 150 different teas, tea blends and tisanes (herbal infusions). Choosing a favorite Rishi tea is like trying to pick a favorite child - a pu-erh ginger to zest-up your morning, honeydew melon white for an afternoon pick-me-up, or perhaps a chilled glass of iced summer lemon to take the edge off a hot day. Not to mention a Dragon Well green for some Zen meditation, some Taiwanese oolong for a treat or even Sencha tea powder to mix in your bottled water when you're on the go.
Rishi Tea was started in 1997 when Joshua Kaiser returned from his travels in Asia only to discover that the fine, handcrafted teas he had grown to love while abroad weren't readily available in the states. He saw a need, and with the help of his friend Benjamin Harrison, they founded Rishi Tea in a tiny, windowless warehouse space in the Third Ward. From those humble beginnings, Rishi Tea has grown to become one of the most prominent tea importers in the country. In fact, Rishi took home 11 first place trophies at the 2009 World Tea Championship at the World Tea Expo.
While it's almost impossible to pick just one favorite from this organic, fair trade company's offerings, it's easy to pick a favorite spot to try new Rishi tea: the Anaba Tea Room in Shorewood. Anaba hosts tastings of Rishi teas throughout the year, and the tranquil setting and fresh, seasonal menu offerings are the perfect complement to the delicious experience of savoring these exceptional teas.
