SHOPPORTUNITIES
by Jan Uebelherr

While the Garden Room at 2107 E. Capitol Dr. in Shorewood is just a little shop, it's filled with baubles that intrigue - from hard-working clay pots and push mowers to an impressive array of garden statuary (stone rabbits, pigs, cats, dogs, frogs, and more).  You'll find topiary shears, birdhouses for every taste, wind chimes, weather vanes, silvery gazing balls, lanterns and decorative edging for beds.

Garden tools from Burgon & Ball Ltd. of Sheffield, England, are featured items, with new arrivals displayed prominently on a table at the front.  Boxed sets in cool colors (pink or blue handles) go for $36.75 for a stainless steel hand trowel and fork.

You will also find an excellent selection of gnomes (inanimate, at least during a recent visit).  Should you care to build your gnome knowledge, pick up a copy of "Gnome Life:  A Monthly Celebration of Secrets, Tales and Whimsy" by Wil Huygen and famed Dutch illustrator Rien Poortvliet.

For little gardeners, there's a children's zone with books, games and gear inspired by the natural world - from slickers and boots with ladybug and frog themes, to a pint-size Burgon & Ball watering can filled with scaled-down garden tools ($27.50).  (For the wee gardener who has everything.)

If all this doesn't inspire, take the elevator to the rooftop garden.  It's built around an oval brick path that encircles the massive skylight that illuminates the store below.  Trees, shrubs and statuary suggest an orderly Victorian garden.

Garden Room hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.  Closed Mondays.
